New Editor in Chief for Clinical Oncology

The RCR is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Thankamma Ajithkumar as the new Editor in Chief of Clinical Oncology. Dr Ajithkumar will take over from Professor Ananya Choudhury. 

We would like to thank Professor Choudhury for leading the journal since May 2021. Her commitment and expertise have guided Clinical Oncology through some challenging times and, moreover, have ensured the journal continued to grow from strength to strength. She will take up a new position within the RCR as the Chair of the Clinical Oncology Academic Committee

Dr Ajithkumar is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge and begins his tenure as Editor in Chief following his service as Deputy Editor for special issues.  

He was trained at Trivandrum Medical College and Regional Cancer Centre, India and then undertook a research fellowship at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London. He trained in clinical oncology in the Eastern Deanery. Before working in Cambridge, Dr Ajithkumar held Consultant appointments at the Bristol Oncology Centre and Norwich and Norfolk University Hospital.  

His research interests include radiotherapy for paediatric brain tumours and the optimisation of the combination of radiotherapy with novel agents in pancreatic cancer.  

Dr Ajithkumar is the lead editor of three textbooks: Specialist Training in Oncology (Elsevier), Oxford Desk Reference: Oncology (Oxford University Press) and Oxford Case Histories in Oncology (OUP). He is a co-editor of the Imaging in Clinical Oncology, second edition (OUP). He has published extensively and is involved in multiple international research groups. Dr Ajithkumar is Chair of the European Society of Paediatric Oncology’s (SIOPE) Brain Tumour Radiotherapy and Germ Cell Tumour groups.  

Dr Ajithkumar said: ‘It is an honour and privilege to take on the role of Editor in Chief of Clinical Oncology, which has been hugely influential during my training and career. I look forward to working with the editorial team to continue to improve the global impact of the journal in clinical oncology practice’ 

Dr Ajithkumar will take up his position from 23 September 2022 and will serve as Editor in Chief for a period of four years. Please join us in congratulating Dr Ajithkumar on his appointment.
