CR Research Day: Connecting the radiology research community

Professor Stuart Taylor is an emeritus NIHR senior Investigator, Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, past chair of the NIHR Imaging group and the National Speciality Lead for Imaging in the new NIHR RDN structure. His research interest is in Gastrointestinal radiology and he chairs the research committee for the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology. He is past president of BSGAR. 

Dr. Abhishekh Hulegar Ashok is an Academic Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Radiology at the University of Cambridge and an Interventional Neuroradiology Registrar. His primary research focuses on neuroimaging, with a particular interest in metabolic imaging techniques and blood-based biomarkers to evaluate outcomes following endovascular treatment in cerebrovascular disorders, including stroke. Additionally, he is conducting research on the performance of AI in detecting neurovascular pathology.

Dr Jason Mak completed his doctoral studies at King's College London and is an academic radiology registrar at University College London Hospital with a subspecialty interest in GI imaging. He is the co-chair of RADIANT and aims to create more opportunities for radiology trainees to get involved in national research and audit projects.

Stavros Stivaros is Director of Imaging at the University of Manchester and a Paediatric Neuroradiologist at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.  He directs the North of England and Northern Ireland Children’s Epilepsy Surgery Service.  His work on artificial intelligence in specific disease groups, such as children’s brain tumours and Neurofibromatosis, has won international recognition at the Children’s Tumour Foundation and the International Society of Paediatric Neuro-oncology.  He was joint senior author on the global study that first described SARS-CoV-2 infection in children’s brains and lead on a multi-centre UK study on rates of inflicted trauma in children during lockdown.

Prof Sotirios Bisdas is a renowned, London-based neuroradiologist with over 16 years of professional experience. His areas of expertise include brain and spine oncology, epilepsy, dementia, ear, skull base and neck diseases, and artificial intelligence assisted imaging. He holds the positions of Associate Professor of Neuroradiology at University College London, Professor of Radiology at the University of Tübingen, and Adjunct Professor of Neuroradiology at the MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas. Prof Bisdas is also Fellow of the European Society of Head and Neck Radiology. He is active in medical research, having published over 230 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and delivered more than 300 keynote lectures and educational presentations all over the world, belonging to the 10% most influential researchers in Radiology and Medicine. He is member of various neuroradiology societies, Secretary of the European Society of Medical Imaging and Informatics, and past member of the Executive Committee of the European Society of Head and Neck Radiology.

Nuala Healy is Chair and Professor of Radiology in Beaumont Hospital and Royal College of Surgeons, Dublin, Ireland. She completed her medical training at the National University of Ireland, Galway in 2006, followed by two years of basic surgical training, and obtained an M.D. and Masters in Clinical Education from Galway.
Her radiology training was undertaken at St. James’ Hospital, Dublin, Ireland with Breast Imaging fellowships at the Mater Hospital, Dublin, Ireland and Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, UK. She was appointed as a consultant breast and oncology radiologist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, in 2018.

Professor Healy is research lead for the British Society of Breast Radiology (BSBR).

Jonathan is a Senior Lecturer and an Honorary Consultant Cardiothoracic Radiologist at KCL. His research interests lie in the use of cardiovascular CT and MRI for better understanding how these can be used to improve patient treatment and outcomes in structural and coronary artery disease.  He has authored >140 peer reviewed publications, co-authored the SCCT guidelines on the role of CT in the assessment for transcatheter aortic valve insertion, and the BSCI/BSTI guidelines on the reporting of calcification on routine chest CT.  He sits on the executive committee of the BSCI, guideline committee of the SCCT, the Certification and Accreditation Committee of the EACVI, and Diagnostic Advisory Committee of NICE. 

Dr Mills is the current chair of the academic subcommittee of the British Society of Neuroradiologists (BSNR). She is actively involved with a wide number of research projects both at a local and national level in a wide variety of neuroradiological areas including neuro-oncology, neuro-inflammation and neuro-degeneration.

Dr Withey is consultant radiologist at The Royal Marsden Hospital in London, subspecialising in urological and oncological imaging. He is also the Research and Guidelines Officer for the British Society of Urogenital Radiology, and part of the Prostate MRI and Renal Imaging working groups for the European Society of Urogenital Radiology.

Dr Withey has published widely and lectures nationally and internationally on urological imaging. He teaches prostate MRI for for both BSUR and ESUR. He advises the RCR on the iRefer guidelines for urological imaging, has been involved in the FRCR 2A examination panels, and currently is working with NICE on new guidance on Kidney Cancer.

Dr Anita Wale is a Consultant Radiologist at St George's Hospital and Deputy Research Lead for the Imaging Research Group. She has an academic and clinical interest in the development and validation of imaging biomarkers and in developing the next generation of multi-disciplinary researchers. 

Dr McLeavy is a Radiologist with specialist interests in Emergency Imaging, Genitourinary and Neuroradiology Radiology. He works at a Major Trauma Centre in Liverpool where he is the Clinical Governance lead and former Clinical Lead for Imaging. He current President at the British Society of Emergency Radiology (BSER) in addition to being Specialist Interest Group Lead for Trauma Imaging at the RCR, iRefer and FRCR 2A exam. He is a regular speaker at various national and international conferences and has published papers on a variety of topics related to acute imaging.

Ruth C. Carlos, MD MS is Professor of Radiology and Director of Research on Outcomes and Care Delivery in Center for Innovation in Imaging Biomarkers and Integrated Diagnostics.  Her work focuses on social genomics and the biological impact of adverse social context on cancer.  She lends her perspective as a thought leader to the National Academy of Medicine, the National Quality Forum and The Joint Commission.  She previously served as President of the American Roentgen Ray Society and Association of University Radiologists.  She has been award the AUR Gold Medal for service and contribution to the field.
