Membership Survey 2023
73% are proud to be part of the RCR
Fellows and members are proud to be part of the RCR, and you feel we help make the profession stronger. This pride is underpinned by our learning programmes, the standards we set for our professions and the support we give you. You particularly value the following areas the most: e-learning, standards and clinical publications.
"Approachable, high standards, clearly written publications, relevant to UK practice."
UK FellowOncology
50% agree that the RCR effectively represents radiologists and oncologists in the media.
You shared your sense of community and belonging, with over half of you wanting to become more involved with the work of the College and help us shape the future of our professions.
You also felt that we could be more influential and visible in advocating for a stronger workforce and in shaping the future, particularly for trainees, who are facing threats to training, rising fees and difficulties with exams.
As Fellows and members, you felt that the RCR can be slightly distant, and that we need to show that we continue to listen to you and back you through the current challenges. As part of improving this, we wanted to share with you exactly what action we have and will be taking as a result of your feedback.
“The RCR is home to me. I can access the RCR for information and help anytime that I need it.”

Take a look below to see what changes we’ve been making:
Investment in the workplace remains our top priority.
- We published our 2024 workforce census reports on 5 June, providing us with the platform to continue to highlight workforce shortages. This has led to meetings with all three health ministers in the devolved nations and top decision-makers in NHS England, as well as widespread coverage in the papers and on the radio. On launch day alone, we were mentioned on TV and radio over 200 times.
We continue to advocate on behalf of our Fellows, members and specialties. Since the membership survey, we have:
- Discussed the complex nature of healthcare delivery with politicians including the Secretary of State, and relevant health ministers.
- Improved our media impact compared to 2023 – landing top stories in leading national newspapers on issues such as recruitment freezes in our specialties, what’s needed next in AI, the impact of workforce shortages in radiology and the need to invest in training more radiologists.
- Delivered two campaigns to attract the next generation of oncologists, resulting in a combined fill rate of 71% across two rounds of recruitment in 2024
- Updated the Specialty Specific Guidance for the GMC Portfolio Pathway route to entry to the GMC specialist register (formerly known as CESR) to provide more clarity on requirements. We are strengthening our support for applicants through updated website resources and expert-led webinars
- Written a policy briefing on the case for greater investment in diagnostic equipment.
- Worked with the DHSC and NHSE to support safe and smart delivery of AI tools into clinical practice whilst keeping Doctors at the heart of patient care.
- Seen our concerns and issues taken on board to reform the health service in the 10 Year Plan for the NHS
- Represented your views as the Assisted Dying Bill took centre stage
Shaping the future
- We are developing a registry of regulatory-approved radiology and diagnostic AI tools being deployed across the NHS, which will enable Trusts to see how AI is being deployed in other settings as well as enabling audit at scale, service evaluation and research.
- We hosted our first ever global AI conference in 2025 in partnership with the NHSE, with over 1,000 attendees from 54 countries with a 2nd Conference to take place in June 2026.
- AI courses and events feature as part of our learning offer, keeping you at the forefront of its safe implementation.
- We have published guidance on AI deployment fundamentals for medical imaging and AI in Auto-contouring.
Concerns about training opportunities are a high priority for us.
- We produced our Leaders of the Future document, outlining the key principles of training for our specialties, as defined by our members. This was shared with trusts, government and other key stakeholders with responsibility for training.
- We acted on Physician Associates, calling on the GMC to prioritise training for residents, and shared our views with the Leng Review. Now that the Review has been published we've updated our position to be clear that there is no role for PAs within Diagnostic Radiology, and announced further work ahead to define a limited and tightly-defined scope of practice within Interventional Radiology and Clinical Oncology.
- We have launched an exam prep course for radiology and made the existing exam prep question bank for oncology free for members, meaning all digital exam prep resources will be free for members.
- We are developing our exam booking system, enabling booking changes and seat swaps, helping residents to secure their preferred venue.
- We have expanded the capacity of our global exams, delivering our highest volume of FRCR exams in one year, while also introducing a new reformed CR2B exam giving a better experience for residents.
- We have made the onboarding journey for new trainees more welcoming and informative by better signposting support and benefits.
- We have appointed a Venue and Invigilator Officer whose role is to ensure fit-for-purpose exam environments .
- We launched our QSI Quality Improvement Hub and an in-house assessment scheme to ensure a more flexible and partnering approach to quality improvement.
- We relaunched our mentoring programme in 2024 to make it available for everybody, giving support as Fellows and members progress through their careers.
- We launched our ‘Spotlight On’ series, designed by doctors, for doctors, with practical tips for all aspects of work.
- With your help, the Resident Doctor Forum has developed the Radiology Specialist Interest Showcase webinars.
- We have continued to hold training events and courses around the country and online, to make them even more accessible for members.
- We have created a Contributor Strategy to effectively engage and support individuals who contribute to the College. We have hosted appreciation events and made ongoing efforts to recognise and thank Contributors for their time and expertise
- We launched our new member magazine Wave this year, following your feedback, keeping you up to date on the issues that matter most to you.
- We relaunched our website with a better search function and easier navigation
- We moved our journals online to meet best practice and enable more articles to be published
- We are building more engagement via social media to promote our specialties, and to amplify issues facing our Fellows and members.
- Our 2,000-member Insight Panel provides us with incredible feedback and views on policy and RCR projects. We will continue to encourage Fellows and members to sign up, enabling more opportunities to influence our activity. If you've not already done so, why not sign up here.
