Member Survey 2023
73% are proud to be part of the RCR
Fellows and members are proud to be part of the RCR, and you feel we help make the profession stronger. This pride is underpinned by our learning programmes, the standards we set for our professions and the support we give you. You particularly value the following areas the most: e-learning, standards and clinical publications.
"Approachable, high standards, clearly written publications, relevant to UK practice."
UK FellowOncology
50% agree that the RCR effectively represents radiologists and oncologists in the media.
You shared your sense of community and belonging, with over half of you wanting to become more involved with the work of the College and help us shape the future of our professions.
You also felt that we could be more influential and visible in advocating for a stronger workforce and in shaping the future, particularly for trainees, who are facing threats to training, rising fees and difficulties with exams.
As Fellows and members, you felt that the RCR can be slightly distant, and that we need to show that we continue to listen to you and back you through the current challenges. As part of improving this, we wanted to share with you exactly what action we have and will be taking as a result of your feedback.
“The RCR is home to me. I can access the RCR for information and help anytime that I need it.”

Take a look below to see what changes we’ve been making:
Investment in the workplace remains our top priority.
- We published our 2023 workforce census reports on 13 June, providing us with the platform to continue to highlight workforce shortages. Our officers were interviewed by the BBC and the census was featured by all major national news outlets.
We continue to advocate on behalf of our Fellows, members and specialties. Since the members' survey, we have:
- Discussed the complex nature of healthcare delivery with politicians including the Secretary of State, and relevant health ministers.
- Achieved wide media coverage in major news outlets on cancer waiting times, scan waiting times, AI and workforce gaps.
- Delivered a campaign to attract the next generation of oncologists, resulting in a 35% increase in applications to training posts. A further campaign is underway.
- Worked with the GMC to create the new Portfolio Pathway (formerly known as CESR) to provide a more streamlined route to entry to the GMC specialist register, and we are developing new routes for global radiologists and oncologists to join the UK workforce.
- Written a policy briefing on the case for greater investment in diagnostic equipment.
Shaping the future
- With your help, we are developing a registry of regulatory-approved radiology and diagnostic AI tools being deployed across the NHS, which will enable Trusts to see how AI is being deployed in other settings as well as enabling audit at scale, service evaluation and research.
- We will host our first ever global AI conference in 2025 in partnership with the NHS.
- AI will be included in our curriculum and learning, keeping you at the forefront of its safe implementation.
- We will be publishing guidance on AI deployment fundamentals for medical imaging and AI in auto-contouring.
Concerns about training opportunities are a high priority for us.
- We have formed a task and finish group to investigate training opportunities and challenges cited by current trainees and trainers. This group aims to create a template for training, particularly in radiology, to ensure that the doctors of the future receive the training, guidance, experience and support that they need to lead in their specialty. The group will also establish routes to advocating for Trusts to deliver on this template.
- We have called for the prioritisation of training for specialist trainees in our response to the GMC consultation on regulation of Physician Associates.
- We are working towards launching exam preparation courses in 2025 in direct response to member feedback.
- We are continuing to develop our exam booking system, enabling booking changes, seat swaps, and bulk bookings.
- We will make the onboarding journey for new trainees more welcoming and informative by better signposting support and benefits.
- We have appointed a Venue and Invigilator Officer whose role is to ensure fit-for-purpose exam environments that demonstrate value for money, minimising delivery issues and ensuring that delivery costs are controlled.
- We are investing in a new online learning platform with a more professional interface and a significantly improved user experience to make it easier to find educational content online. We are aiming to launch the reformed platform later this year.
- We have launched our new QSI Quality Improvement Hub and an in-house assessment scheme to ensure a more flexible and partnering approach to quality improvement.
- We relaunched our mentoring programme in February 2024 to make it available for everybody, giving support as Fellows and members progress through their careers.

· We have relaunched our website with a better search function and easier navigation; we are relaunching our quarterly newsletter to provide more stories about innovations and challenges in our specialties; we are moving our journals online to meet best practice and enable more articles to be published; and we are building more engagement via social media to promote our specialties, and to amplify issues facing our Fellows and members.
· Our 1,700-member Insight Panel provides us with incredible feedback and views on policy and RCR projects. We will continue to encourage Fellows and members to sign up, enabling more opportunities to influence our activity. If you've not already done so, why not sign up here.
· We will continue to hold training events around the country and online, to make them even more accessible for members.
