Course Lead - FRCR 1 Physics Exam Prep Course

Role overview

The Course Lead for our FRCR 1 Physics Exam Prep Course is a voluntary role within the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR). The role holder will work collaboratively with the RCR Learning team and the Exam Prep Portfolio Lead for Clinical Radiology (CR) to provide clinical oversight and educational leadership in the delivery and development of our Exam prep course for Physics. 

Working in collaboration with a faculty of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), the Course Lead will develop and deliver a revision course for those undertaking the FRCR part 1 physics exam. The course is intended to provide attendees with an understanding of the scientific basis of medical imaging and to equip delegates with the knowledge and skills required to approach the multiple-choice questions relevant to the FRCR part 1 physics exam. 

The Course Lead will be required to consider an innovative approach to deliver the content, considering ways to combine engaging learning using dynamic formats, while giving participants the opportunity for interaction with faculty and SMEs.

The post holder will collaborate with the Exam Prep Portfolio Lead, to ensure our offerings complement the wider RCR Learning portfolio, supports innovation in medical education, and contributes to the RCR’s mission to enhance training, learning, and professional development across healthcare.

b) Key Responsibilities

  1. Be the Course Lead (and Subject Matter Expert) for the Exam Prep - Physics course in alignment with RCR’s strategic objectives and professional standards 
  2. Collaborate with the RCR Learning team and Exam Prep Portfolio Lead to undertake strategic planning for the course, aligned to RCR Learning’s objectives
  3. Collaborate with the RCR Learning team and Exam Prep Portfolio Lead to identify and enact opportunities to refresh and improve the course as and when required
  4. Oversee the course and assure course quality, clinical relevance and alignment with curriculum standards and professional frameworks for the Exam Prep Course –Physics 
  5. Review course delivery evaluation to identify opportunities for continuous improvement and for sharing best practice
  6. Form part of the faculty to deliver first-hand the course, observing delivery across the course and identifying opportunities for improvement
  7. Lead and support a team of faculty (voluntary contributors), facilitating the sharing of best practice and ensuring all courses are delivered to the RCR’s quality standards
  8. Support the RCR team to recruit course faculty
  9. Collaborate with the RCR Learning team, portfolio leads, and subject matter experts
  10. Attend relevant meetings as and when required, such as our planning meetings and portfolio strategy days
  11. Uphold RCR values and code of conduct in all activities
  12. Undertake other duties relevant to the scope of the role in line with faculty and RCR strategic priorities

c) Time Commitment

  1. Voluntary, three-year term (extendable by invitation)
  2. Minimum of 8 days per year, including attending courses to deliver and observe, planning, and evaluation.
  3. Meetings planned for at least one year in advance.

d) Eligibility Criteria

Fellow of the College by examination (no minimum period as a Fellow is required), resident in the United Kingdom, hold a current licence to practice with the General Medical Council (GMC) and be in active clinical practice.

e) Experience & Skills

  1. Clinical background in physics with excellent understanding of the FRCR 1 curriculum and examinations
  2. Experience in educational programme or course development, preferably exam-focused
  3. Knowledge of current best practice in medical education, assessment design, and learning resources
  4. Strong leadership and organisational skills, with experience coordinating multiple contributors or teams
  5. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with clinicians, educators, data scientists, and industry or academic partners, building strong and effective cross-disciplinary relationships
  6. Excellent communication, leadership, and influencing skills, with experience guiding multidisciplinary teams and subject matter experts to deliver innovative and high-quality learning products
  7. Sound understanding of clinical education frameworks, accreditation processes, and digital learning methodologies relevant to postgraduate medical education and technology-enhanced learning
  8. Desirable: experience in digital learning resources, e-learning platforms, or blended learning programmes

  5. Joint leadership with other course leads as appropriate

h) Professional Conduct & Confidentiality

  1. Adherence to RCR values and Contributor Code of Conduct
  2. Maintenance of confidentiality and integrity, including compliance with the Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR 2016
  3. Assignment of intellectual property rights for course materials to the RCR
  4. Representation of RCR only with prior agreement to ensure communications reflect the organisation’s official stance
