The RCR is playing an increasingly central role in AI. In order to help the RCR’s approach to how it should proceed in Clinical Oncology-related AI, we are looking to appoint a Clinical Oncology (CO) AI Lead Adviser, to help shape our thinking, bring contacts and expertise, and be integral to our work in this area.

The work may involve liaison with the NHS, Department of Health and Social Care, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, and other key organisations and individuals.

The term of office for the CO AI Lead Adviser is two years plus four months. The post-holder may be re-appointed for a further period of up to one year if appropriate and by mutual agreement of the post-holder, the co-Chair and the Faculty Leadership Team. The term for this role would start on 1st May 2026 after the term for the current CO AI Lead Adviser completes and will finish at the end of 31st August 2028.

Role and responsibilities

The principal duties of the CO AI Lead Advisor will be:

  • Co-Chairing meetings of the CO AI Advisory Committee
  • Reporting on the work of the CO AI Advisory Committee to the CO Faculty Leadership Team.

Time commitment

Overall, it is anticipated that the role will require an average of approximately one to two days per month, though this will vary, and will rarely involve a whole day at a time. Time will be needed for preparing for and co-chairing meetings of the CO AI Advisory Committee, including agenda-setting, report preparation and pre-reading of all meeting materials. We are happy to represent the importance of the role to your employing trust if this will help secure the time needed to undertake the role. It is expected that the appointee will liaise closely with the President and the Vice-President, CO.

There may be occasions when the lead is asked to attend specific College meetings, and external events, meetings and conferences on behalf of the Faculty e.g. with other stakeholders. Participation in such events will be discussed and agreed in advance with the President or Vice-President CO and will amount to no more than a few days per year.

Operation in the role

The role of the CO AI Lead Adviser may mean interfacing with commercial suppliers. To that end, the guidance contained in the College’s Conflicts of Interest policy and the procedures for managing actual or perceived conflicts of interest should be followed. This will mean making advance declarations of interest to ensure they are given proper consideration.

The CO AI Lead Adviser will not express any opinion or make any statement publicly or to the media that is held out to be a view from the College without first consulting and agreeing the approach with the President.

This is a voluntary role. The RCR will meet the travel expenses incurred by the CO AI Lead Adviser in travelling to the RCR and other agreed events, in accordance with the College travel and expenses policy.
