Role overview

The Clinical Oncology Exam Preparation (CO Exam Prep) Portfolio Lead is a voluntary leadership role within the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR), working collaboratively with the RCR Learning team. Sitting on the Clinical Oncology Learning Leadership Group (CO LLG) alongside several other portfolio leads; the post holder will report to the CO LLG Chair who reports to our Vice Presidents as part of our Strategic Board.

The post holder will manage a team of Course Leads and ensure our CO Exam Preparation courses portfolio is high quality, needs-based and continually improved. They will collaborate with the RCR Learning team and the Course Leads to create a portfolio strategy, periodically review the size and shape of the portfolio, ensure feedback and innovative best practice from each course is shared across the portfolio, ensuring all courses meet the needs of clinical oncology trainees and support their success in RCR examinations. The role is central to the RCR’s mission to support and empower healthcare professionals at every stage of their career.

This role plays a key part in maintaining high educational standards and ensuring that exam preparation materials reflect current best practice, are aligned with the RCR curricula and assessment frameworks, and are engaging, accessible, and evidence-based.

a) Portfolio- CO Exam Prep

This is a new portfolio with intentions to include relevant CO exam prep courses as determined and with the potential for additional courses to be developed via the RCR Learning new product development process.

b) Key Responsibilities

  1. Be the clinical lead (and Subject Matter Expert) for the Clinical Oncology Exam Prep Courses Portfolio in alignment with RCR’s strategic objectives and professional standards
  2. Collaborate with the RCR Learning team to undertake strategic planning for the course portfolio, aligned to RCR Learning’s objectives
  3. Collaborate with the RCR Learning team to identify and enact opportunities to refresh and improve courses within the portfolio, including via course review processes
  4. Oversee the portfolio and assure course quality, clinical relevance and alignment with curriculum standards and professional frameworks for courses within the portfolio
  5. Review course delivery (event) evaluations to identify opportunities for continuous improvement and for sharing best practice
  6. Attend one of each course per year to see delivery first-hand
  7. Support meta-reviews of product evaluations within their portfolio
  8. Lead and support a team of Course Leads (voluntary contributors), facilitating the sharing of best practice and ensuring all courses are delivered to the RCR’s quality standards
  9. Support the RCR team to recruit course leads
  10. Contribute to broader RCR learning and development initiatives, sharing expertise and ensuring consistency across clinical disciplines
  11. Collaborate with the RCR Learning team, course leads, and subject matter experts
  12. Attend relevant meetings, such as our Clinical Oncology Learning Leadership Group and portfolio strategy days
  13. Uphold RCR values and code of conduct in all activities
  14. Undertake other duties relevant to the scope of the role in line with faculty and RCR strategic priorities

c) Time Commitment

  1. Voluntary, three-year term (extendable by invitation)
  2. Minimum of 8 days per year, including attending courses to observe, planning, and evaluation.
  3. Meetings planned for at least one year in advance.

d) Eligibility Criteria

Fellow of the College by examination (no minimum period as a Fellow is required), resident in the United Kingdom, hold a current license to practice with the General Medical Council (GMC) and be in active clinical practice

e) Experience & Skills

  1. Clinical background in Clinical Oncology with excellent understanding of the CO curriculum and examinations
  2. Experience in educational programme or course development, preferably exam-focused
  3. Knowledge of current best practice in medical education, assessment design, and learning resources
  4. Strong leadership and organisational skills, with experience coordinating multiple contributors or teams
  5. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with clinicians, educators, data scientists, and industry or academic partners, building strong and effective cross-disciplinary relationships
  6. Excellent communication, leadership, and influencing skills, with experience guiding multidisciplinary teams and subject matter experts to deliver innovative and high-quality learning products
  7. Sound understanding of clinical education frameworks, accreditation processes, and digital learning methodologies relevant to postgraduate medical education and technology-enhanced learning
  8. Desirable: experience in digital learning resources, e-learning platforms, or blended learning programmes

g) Support Provided

  1. Support by the CO LLG Chair
  2. Supported by the RCR Learning team
  3. RCR Learning staff will manage the product management, marketing, pricing, event logistics, sponsorship, and non-clinical aspects
  4. Dedicated staff point of contact within the team
  5. Joint leadership with other Faculty Leads as appropriate

h) Professional Conduct & Confidentiality

  1. Adherence to RCR values and Contributor Code of Conduct
  2. Maintenance of confidentiality and integrity, including compliance with the Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR 2016
  3. Assignment of intellectual property rights for course materials to the RCR
  4. Representation of RCR only with prior agreement to ensure communications reflect the organisation’s official stance

j) Induction & Onboarding

Portfolio leads will receive induction and ongoing support from the RCR Learning team, including access to resources and training as needed.

k) Feedback & Evaluation

Performance and course quality will be reviewed through delegate feedback, observations, peer review, and post-course evaluation meetings.

l) Succession Planning

Handover to a new portfolio lead will be managed collaboratively to ensure continuity and knowledge transfer.
