Standards for interpretation and reporting of imaging investigations

Date: 2025
LEARN MORE

Standards for the reporting and interpretation of imaging investigations provide a baseline that all radiology reports should achieve, so that the quality and consistency of imaging interpretation can be assured. Adherence to these standards will ensure that image interpretation continues to add value to patient diagnostic and treatment pathways.

This guidance has been written by and for radiologists, who are experts in interpreting medical imaging, with contributions from other professional groups. It underpins radiologists’ role as leaders and experts in medical imaging but should apply to all who interpret and report imaging, regardless of their professional background.

This edition replaces Standards for interpretation and reporting of imaging investigations Second edition, published in 2018.

When reading this guidance, please consider the following reflective questions:

  1. What are the benefits to my service of implementing this guidance?
  2. What are the key barriers to implementing this guidance in my service?
  3. Does the guidance incite any ideas for quality improvement projects that I, or others in my service, might take forward?

We are excited to announce that a post-publication webinar will be held for this guidance on Tuesday 10 February 2026 (17:15-18:00). For more information and to register please visit our events page.
