RCR welcomes funding for med tech research

The Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) has welcomed this UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) announcement: British research expertise to deliver faster cancer diagnosis and cleaner energy.

On 19 February, the Science Minister Lord Vallance announced funding for research including:

  • A new medical imaging programme, backed by £55 million, to create ‘Centres of Imaging Excellence' in England, Scotland and Wales. These hubs for cutting-edge med tech will bring together the latest scanning technology with clinical expertise to unlock new insights into how diseases develop and why some infections resist drugs.
  • An £80 million National Materials Innovation Programme to help UK innovations reach market faster and keep production in Britain.

Dr Stephen Harden, President of the RCR, said:

“Research and innovation play an important part in improving cancer diagnosis and treatment, so we welcome these new government-backed research programmes.

This significant £55 million investment in a new medical imaging programme highlights the vital role that medical imaging and the radiologists who interpret these scans will continue to play in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The plan to develop and manufacture more innovative materials in the UK is another positive step towards ensuring patients can access the most cutting-edge cancer treatments sooner.”
