Diagnostic and Cancer Waiting Times data for December 2023

Responding to December’s Diagnostic Waiting Times data for England, Dr Katharine Halliday, President of The Royal College of Radiologists, said:

"The deterioration in performance against diagnostic waiting times in today’s figures is disheartening. In December 2023, approximately one in five patients were waiting more than six weeks for their CT or MRI imaging test. This alarming figure not only impacts patients but adds to the strain of the workload of radiologists responsible for interpreting these intricate imaging scans.

“The escalating demand for CT and MRI imaging, which has surged by 11% over the past year, has outpaced the growth of consultant numbers, specialty training places, and the essential training capacity needed to train the next generation of radiologists. While we appreciate the commitment to increasing training places in the future, we seek further clarity on how training capacity will be expanded to accommodate these future doctors.

“In the interim, urgent and concerted efforts are imperative from NHS England, local trusts, and the Government to address the shortage of radiologists. Retaining doctors and creating an environment where they feel valued and encouraged to stay within the system is crucial for maintaining the quality and efficiency of patient care."

Today’s NHS England data shows us that in December 2023, nearly one in five patients were waiting more than six weeks for their CT or MRI imaging test – equivalent to 8,000 more patients than in November 2023.

The NHS in England would have to employ 406 diagnostic radiology consultants overnight in order to clear the 6 week wait for CT and MRI scans in one month.

*This is calculated based on CT scans and MRI scans taking an average 15 and 20 minutes respectively to report.

Cancer waiting times

Performance against cancer waiting times improved in December 2023, despite three days of industrial action, a testament to the hard work of doctors across the country.
