Clinical oncology UK workforce census 2018 report

Date of next review:

The RCR annual clinical oncology workforce census provides comprehensive, accurate and timely data on the UK clinical oncology workforce. The RCR has carried out workforce censuses annually since 2008. Census and training data are used by the RCR to monitor key workforce trends, forecast future numbers of consultant clinical oncologists, and highlight any gaps between the workforce supply and the demand for cancer treatments.

Findings in the clinical oncology UK workforce census 2018 and highlighted in the infographic are concerning. While the demand for cancer services is increasing, workforce shortages are growing, vacant consultant posts cannot be filled, and consultant clinical oncologists have less time than ever for professional and service development. These powerful but concerning data are used by the RCR to lobby government, health education bodies, and policy-makers for increased training numbers and improved working practices for clinical oncologists. The data can also be used by cancer centres to benchmark themselves against national data.

We would like to thank all heads of service for participating in the 2018 census and ensuring robust data, with a 100% completion rate.
