The Trustee Board

The Trustee Board is responsible for the management and administration of the RCR, and is the highest level of governance in the College.

The Trustee Board is responsible for the management and administration of the College. It approves the College's Strategy, the annual budget and the annual accounts, and is responsible for reviewing and managing risk. The Trustee Board has oversight of all major cross-College projects and activities.

The Trustee Board is comprised of the eight Officers of the College – seven of whom are elected by the membership and one of whom is appointed by Council – a lay Treasurer and up to three lay Trustees. The Officers form the majority of the Trustees, with lay trustees bringing particular skills and experience to assist the effective management of the RCR across its range of work. The President chairs the Trustee Board.

Members of the Trustee Board are the Trustees of the RCR under Charity law.

Chair

After completing her radiology training in London, Australia, Sheffield and Nottingham, Dr Halliday was appointed as a Consultant Paediatric Radiologist at Nottingham University Hospital in 1998. She has a special interest in the imaging of suspected physical abuse and provides expert opinions for cases throughout the UK. She was Chair of the British Society of Paediatric Radiology from 2010-2016 and chaired the working group for the updated guidance for imaging in cases of suspected physical abuse in children.

In September 2017, Dr Halliday was appointed National Clinical Lead for the Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) programme for Radiology, and the Radiology GIRFT report was published in July 2020. Dr Halliday took over as Clinical Director for Radiology at Nottingham University Hospitals in January 2021.

Dr Halliday's tenure as RCR President is 2022-2025.

Mr Carey is a chartered accountant and chartered director and was for many years a partner at the accountancy firm Mazars, where he is currently Senior Adviser, Board Practice and Public Policy. Mr Carey is also an experienced non-executive director and has taken a particular interest in the higher education and health sectors. He is currently a Council member at Lancaster University and on the board of the Florence Nightingale Foundation, where he serves on each of their finance committees.

He is a Lay Trustee at The Royal College of Ophthalmologists and Chair of Uniac, which provides internal audit services within higher education.

Dr Louise Hanna is a consultant clinical oncologist at the Velindre Cancer Centre, Cardiff where she specialises in gynaecological cancer. She completed her medical training at the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford before undertaking her clinical oncology training at the Velindre Cancer Centre.

Dr Hanna has been involved with education and training at the RCR since being the trainee representative for Wales. As a consultant, she has been a member of the Clinical Oncology (CO) Specialty Training Board, has served on the CO Curriculum Committee as clinical lead for quality and more recently, worked alongside Dr Karen Tipples as the clinical lead for CO National Recruitment.

Dr Hanna has experience as Associate Dean (Quality) within Health Education and Improvement Wales and as Assistant Medical Director for Education and Training at Velindre University NHS Trust. She was also the lead editor for the textbook Practical Clinical Oncology (Cambridge University Press).

Dr Stephen Harden is a consultant in cardiothoracic radiology at University Hospital Southampton, having been appointed in 2005.

He completed undergraduate medical training at the University of Cambridge and St Thomas’s Hospital in the University of London. He trained in Clinical Radiology in Wessex and undertook further training in Germany and the USA. His consultant clinical practice includes cardiac and thoracic cross-sectional imaging and PET/CT.

Before his current role, Dr Harden was the Medical Director for Education and Training in Clinical Radiology at the RCR from 2019-2022. He chaired the RCR Clinical Radiology Professional Learning and Development sub-committee from 2017-2019 and has been an FRCR part 2A examiner. Previously, he was President of the British Society of Cardiovascular Imaging, the first RCR travelling cardiac Professor, BIR Vice President, Head of Wessex School of Radiology and the senior cardiac editor for the British Journal of Radiology.

Dr Qaiser Malik is a consultant MSK radiologist and Clinical Director of Radiology at Mid and South Essex NHS Trust and the lead medical appraiser for Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital.

Dr Malik graduated from Imperial College School of Medicine. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer for University College London Medical School and the Clinical Lead for the East 2 Imaging Network. Qaiser also served on the RCR’s Scientific Programme Committee for seven years and was previously the RCR Newsletter editor for two years.

Dr Malik has a keen interest in musculoskeletal MRI and ultrasound (US), including US-guided procedures. He also specialises in imaging and treating sports injuries and has been involved in the care of elite athletes.

Dr Malik's tenure as Medical Director, Membership and Business at the RCR is 2023-2026.

Dr Tom Roques trained as a clinical oncologist in London and Vancouver before becoming a consultant in Norwich in 2004. He specialises in head and neck, thyroid, upper gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary cancers as well as lymphoma radiotherapy. He has particular interests in technical radiotherapy and doctor-patient decision-making.

From 2018 to 2021, he was Medical Director for Professional Practice for Clinical Oncology at the Royal College of Radiologists. He was oncology service director in Norwich from 2010-2016. He has been Chair of the Anglia East head and neck cancer and thyroid cancer multidisciplinary teams since 2005, radiotherapy lead for Norwich and was chair of the Anglia Alliance Radiotherapy Board from 2013-19.

He is one of the four authors of the ‘red book’ (Practical Radiotherapy Planning) and has written many other book chapters, as well as the 2017 RCR guideline on radiotherapy target volume definition and peer review.

Dr Roques's tenure as Vice-President, Clinical Oncology at the RCR is 2022-2025.

Sir David retired as Chief Operating Officer of NHS England on 3 September 2023, having been in the role for almost two years. Before this, he had 24 years of experience as Chief Executive Officer of several NHS trusts in London.

Sir David was awarded a knighthood in 2017 for his services to the NHS and is a Fellow of The Royal Society of Medicine.

Dr Priya Suresh completed her undergraduate training in India, followed by her MRCP in Manchester. Her radiology training was in Manchester and Plymouth, followed by a Fellowship at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore.

Her work with RCR started in 2011 when she initiated READ and served as the Programme Director. Dr Suresh has also sat on several RCR committees including the Curriculum Committee, Specialty Training Board and Faculty Board. She has chaired the FRCR 2A MSK SBA and is currently the Lead for the MSK module of RITI and SIG Lead for the iRefer MSK guidelines.

She is the Academy Lead for the Peninsula Radiology Academy, Training Programme Director and Teaching Lead for imaging and Honorary University fellow.

Dr Nicky Thorp trained in Medicine at the University of Leicester and completed her specialist oncology training at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. She was appointed as a consultant clinical oncologist in 2001 at Clatterbridge with subspeciality interests in breast, paediatric radiotherapy and late effects.

In 2019 she took up a post at the Christie Hospital in Manchester specialising in photon and proton beam therapy for children. Her research interests are in paediatric brain tumours and radiotherapy quality assurance.

Dr Thorp was Associate Medical Director at Clatterbridge between 2010 and 2016. She has served two terms on the RCR CO Faculty Board and is Co-Lead for Wellbeing at the RCR. She is a past member of the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG) Executive and past chair of the CCLG Radiotherapy and Neuro-oncology Groups.

Outside of medicine, Dr Thorp sits on the Foundation Board of the National Museums o Liverpool (NML), having been a member of the NML Trustee Board between 2011 and 2020. She lives in Wirral with her husband and their three children.

A consultant interventional radiologist, Dr Raman Uberoi is a graduate of Cambridge University and has been a fellow of the RCR since 1992. He was clinical lead at John Radcliffe Hospital from 2003 to 2010, and Clinical Director from 2010 to 2012.

He has published over 150 journal articles and is Deputy Editor of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology, as well as serving as a Senior Editor on the boards of Clinical Radiology and the British Journal of Radiology.

Dr Uberoi has served on several RCR committees over the last 20 years including e-standards, Head of Regional Chairs, Faculty Board, the Professional Support and Standards Board and the Interventional Radiology committees.
