The state of clinical AI in UK radiology and oncology
AI tools are now a common feature of radiology and oncology services, supporting clinical decision-making, workflow management, and administrative functions. The potential is significant — greater diagnostic accuracy, improved efficiency, and more time for patient care.
However, the picture in practice remains mixed. Our census data shows that while many centres have introduced AI tools, experiences vary considerably. Some services report clear benefits; others report little change; and some have seen workload increase.
This variation is not surprising. Deploying AI effectively is complex. Expected gains can be offset by the demands of integration, training, and adapting existing workflows. As adoption grows, services need practical, trusted guidance to move from initial deployment towards scalable, sustainable use.
