Integrating image analysis artificial intelligence with radiology reporting workflows (RIS and PACS), second edition
Date: 2026
This guidance supports the safe integration of image analysis artificial intelligence (AI) into radiology reporting workflows. It focuses on the post-acquisition phase of the diagnostic radiology lifecycle, where acquired images are analysed by AI algorithms, in addition to and often before formal radiology reporting. The guidance aims to help reporting authors integrate AI solutions into radiology information system (RIS) and picture archiving and communication system (PACS) workflows without increasing reporting burden.
The guidance is intended for radiologists, reporting radiographers, sonographers and other appropriately trained healthcare professionals who undertake image reporting. It will also be relevant to those involved in the procurement and implementation of AI solutions within radiology departments.
The guidance was developed by an expert working group, chaired by Professor Amaka C Offiah, Vice-President of The Royal College of Radiologists. The group brings together expertise in clinical radiology, artificial intelligence, and education and training, and includes representation from IHE UK.
This second edition been updated to reflect developments in AI technology and radiology practice. It supersedes the first edition, published in 2021.
