Overcoming barriers to AI implementation day

The RCR were able to bring together up to 50 artificial intelligence (AI) company representatives and NHS leads to discuss the current barriers to implementing AI within imaging. The event took place at the College on 27 April 2023 and provided us with several actionable insights, as well as creating the opportunity for networking between both sets of stakeholders.

The ‘Overcoming barriers to AI implementation day’ was a great opportunity to share growing concerns about the reasons why AI is slow to be implemented into imaging. The event looked at the key reasons for barriers in AI and created a forum for well-informed professionals to brainstorm ideas for possible solutions to these challenges.

The day included breakout groups discussing different solutions, Q&A sessions and discussions on the next steps to ensure both providers can smoothly work together moving forward, not just within the United Kingdom but on a global scale.

The main barriers discussed were a lack of evidence, lack of funding, information governance, IT, staff capacity and trust leadership. These topics were split into sub-barriers, allowing each group to divulge the root cause of the barriers and come up with effective ideas to solve them.

Throughout the event, our President, Dr Katharine Halliday, CEO Oliver Reichardt and Professor Andrea Rockall (Chair of the AI Committee) facilitated, ensuring this was an open space to allow opinions to be shared with every detail being heard.

Following the event, the information gathered will be compiled into a summary report of the findings of the day and will be shared on the RCR website in due course.
