Dr Sharad Desai

Dr Sharad Desai

Sharad Chhabildas Desai, husband of Minaxi, father of Monica and Deval, and grandfather to Nayan, Maya and Noah, died aged 74 on 19 July 2023. Sharad was a Consultant Radiologist at the Wigan Wrightington and Leigh (WWL) NHS Foundation Trust for over 30 years.

Having graduated from B.J. Medical College in Ahmedabad, India, in 1973, he trained in several hospitals around the UK before settling as a Consultant Radiologist at WWL in 1986. He served as The Royal College of Radiologists’ examiner for many years from 2001.

26th February 1949 to 19th July 2023

Sharad was instrumental in obtaining WWL’s first computed tomography (CT) scanner in 1991, a novel ‘state of the art technique’ for the time, and he supervised and trained colleagues in its subsequent clinical use. This led the path for WWL to expand its offer of CT and magnetic resonance imaging scanning.

As a clinical tutor, he supported, mentored and guided the career progression of numerous clinical trainees, many of whom were subsequently appointed as consultants in the trust. He created a supportive and inclusive department, providing both clinical and academic training opportunities and pastoral mentorship to all staff. Colleagues regularly sought his views, especially for clinically complex cases, and held his meticulous attention to detail in high regard, particularly in multidisciplinary team meetings where he specialised in gastroenterology.

Sharad was a compassionate and dedicated radiologist. He used his clinical acumen to ensure the best quality of care for patients. This commitment extended to his local Jain community, where he spent countless hours helping those in need of medical and social support. His humility, empathy, charity and attention to detail were central to everything he did.

He is survived by his wife, two children and three grandchildren.
