Welcome to our New Fellows – spring 2018

Wednesday 30 May 2018

On Friday 25 May 2018, we hosted the most important ceremonial event in the RCR’s calendar and welcomed a total of 256 New Fellows to our bi-annual Admission Ceremony. The event was held to celebrate those who have attained their Fellowship of the College, as well as celebrating the achievements of those who have made outstanding contributions to our two specialties. The FRCR is a widely recognised and highly regarded mark of considerable achievement and distinction in our two specialties.

This year's spring ceremony saw four Fellows – Dr Grant Baxter, Professor Neil Burnet, Dr Neelam Dugar and Dr Matthew Trewhella – presented with the Exceptional Contribution Award in recognition of their exceptional service to the College.

Professor Catharine West, an internationally acclaimed radiobiologist, was welcomed to the College as an Honorary Fellow, having made significant contributions to the development of radiotherapy in the UK.

The Roentgen Professorship, which is generously funded by the publishers of the Clinical Radiology journal, was awarded to Dr James Teh, who will visit UK training schemes and give tutorials and lectures to inspire the next generation of radiology research.

Professor Tim Illidge received the Gold Medal for his outstanding track record in improving outcomes for cancer patients through transnational collaboration and research.

Professor Bruno Morgan then delivered a wonderfully engaging Crookshank Lecture entitled ‘Forensic imaging: Richard III to present day’.

The ceremony was followed by a member-focused and inclusive reception, which offered New Fellows the opportunity to celebrate their success and achievements with the trainers, colleagues, friends and family who have supported them along the way.

New Fellows also got to network with College Fellows, who have been a key part of the trainees’ journey and have been invaluable in helping them to reach this milestone. They spoke to New Fellows about how the RCR can support them now they’ve passed their examinations. We also created packs to help New Fellows think about the next step and show them how we are here for our members at every stage of their careers.

Thank you to all those that attended and made the day such a wonderful success. We extend our heartiest congratulations to all award winners and to all our New Fellows.
