Following the success of our popular 2019 scheme, we are delighted to announce that our 2021 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) in Clinical Oncology have opened for applications.
Five awards are available, with funding to support students to complete a Fellowship over the summer. Successful applicants will benefit from mentorship from senior academics and clinicians, while gaining an insight into the field of clinical oncology and academic research.
The scheme was launched in 2019 to offer medical students a unique opportunity to undertake a research project in clinical oncology. These Fellowships saw students from across the UK embark on a broad range of projects, nurturing the next generation of academic clinical oncologists. The scheme was suspended in 2020 due to coronavirus.
Joe Wilson, 2019 SURF award recipient said:
"The RCR SURF programme has been of huge benefit to my academic development over the last two years. Off the back of my research project, I have made lasting mentoring relationships that have been invaluable at each new step of my academic training. I have now authored two papers that would not have been possible without the help of the RCR SURF. Moreover, the skills I gained during my SURF have informed additional research and publications within radiation oncology, as well as fields way outside it. I would wholeheartedly recommend applying to the RCR SURF programme to any medical student who has a passion for clinical oncology, and beyond that, those with a real, tangible interest in the basic science that shapes decisions made at the bedside."
Medical students enrolled in both undergraduate- and graduate-entry programmes in the UK are encouraged to apply by Wednesday 31 March 2021.
