Cancer affects 1 in 3 people at some time during their life and this means that virtually all doctors will come into contact with patients who have or have had cancer. Non-surgical oncology encompasses diagnosis, staging and treatment of cancer with radiotherapy and systemic treatments. The Royal College of Radiologists wants to ensure that junior doctors are adequately prepared to deal with patients who have cancer.
Undergraduate Oncology Day
On the 18 May 2018 the RCR welcomed over 60 delegates to the first ever Undergraduate Oncology Meeting. The free meeting was for undergraduates with an interest in oncology and for consultants or trainees who are undergraduate leads or who are involved in undergraduate oncology teaching. The day included seperate sessions for students and educators and a joint session in the afternoon. The full programme is still available to view and video of some of the talks will be published in due course.
Undergraduate Non-Surgical Oncology Curriculum
To provide a basis for undergraduate non-surgical oncology teaching The Royal College of Radiologists convened a group of clinical and medical oncologists to produce a non-surgical oncology undergraduate curriculum which is available to download:
It is hoped that this curriculum will facilitate medical students gaining the competencies required to enable them to manage patients with cancer appropriately when they graduate.
Undergraduate elective bursaries
Five bursaries funded by The Royal College of Radiologists are available on an annual basis and are intended to support medical students wishing to undertake an elective period of study in clinical oncology in the UK or abroad.
BONUS is the British Oncology Network for Undergraduate Societies, a newly developed national organisation created and directed by UK medical students.
The aims of BONUS are to:
*Promote inter-school collaboration
*Promote oncology and associated specialities
*To share resources and facilitate networking between students interested in cancer
You can email BONUS to find out more.
The College will be working with BONUS in the near future so check back regularly for further information.
