RCR examinations are an internationally recognised benchmark of excellence as well as a vital element of UK training. The Final FRCR Part A examination, consisting of single best answer (SBA) questions, builds on the First examination to assess the knowledge and skills developed across the breadth of the curriculum during core radiology training. 

Examiners join the committee which is responsible for ensuring that the examination meets the needs of the approved radiology training curriculum and meet standards set by the GMC. 

Working practices

Examiners usually meet four times per year (typically two day meetings in January, March, May and September) for question review, selection and standard setting, and meets with SBA panel coordinators for up to three days each November.

Role tasks

Examiners have a range of responsibilities including:

  • Writing and reviewing single-best-answer questions
  • Selecting questions to make up papers as required and checking that each paper appropriately assesses knowledge across the curriculum
  • Standard-setting each paper and setting a pass mark
  • Reviewing the performance of individual questions and rejecting or modifying questions when appropriate
  • Reviewing the pattern of performance of the examination over to time to ensure standards are maintained and identifying areas for improvement

Knowledge and qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Be Fellows of the RCR in good standing
  • Demonstrate that they have undergone appropriate equality and diversity training and are willing to abide by good practice in these areas
  • Be prepared to participate in induction and training activities


  • Applicants are expected to have held a substantive consultant radiologist post within an approved UK training programme for a minimum period (normally at least three years) prior to appointment
  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate previous involvement in teaching and training, and, if possible, assessment
  • It is desirable that applicants have previous experience in writing for SBA panels

  • Must be supported by a current or former Head of School, Regional Specialty Adviser or their Training Programme Director
  • Applications to be an examiner are anonymised and ranked by a panel
  • The College strives for membership of the Board to be as representative as possible of body system specialist interests, clinical practice backgrounds and the distribution of UK training programmes
