Medical Director, Professional Practice, Clinical Radiology

The Medical Director, Professional Practice (MDPP) leads on Clinical Radiology Faculty activities that guide and support Fellows and members throughout their practising careers.  

Work for the Faculty and the College can bring a whole new perspective to your clinical practice. As MDPP, you will be influential, you will help shape the Faculty and the specialty and you will gain an insight to national policy and thinking. As well as helping the College, you can bring that value back to your hospital.  If you have an interest in making a difference to the future of your specialty, this could be the role for you.

What's involved?

Policy for the Faculty and the specialty is agreed by the Faculty Board in line with the RCR’s strategic priorities. The Faculty Board commissions programmes of work to achieve the Annual Plan through the Specialty Training Board and the Professional Support and Standards Board. The structure of the Faculty is appended.

The scope of work which the MDPP leads includes:

  • Development and review of professional guidance and standards
  • The College CPD scheme and revalidation
  • Audit and quality improvement (led by the Faculty Audit and Quality Improvement Committee)
  • IT and informatics resources (led by the Informatics Lead)
  • Academic and research activities outside of training (led by the Academic Committee)
  • Radiation protection, human factors and patient safety (there is an Adviser for each area)
  • Facilitating communication and engagement with the English regions and devolved nations through Regional Chairs
  • Service improvement and development including the Quality Standard for Imaging (QSI) and service reviews

Who’s eligible to stand?

This is an elected position. To put your name forward, you need to be:

  • a Fellow of the College (no minimum period as a Fellow is required)
  • resident in the United Kingdom 
  • on the roll of the Faculty,
  • n active clinical practice, with hold a current licence to practise with the GMC

A supportive team

The MDPP is one of three Faculty Officers, the other two being the Vice-President – who leads the Faculty overall – and the Medical Director, Education and Training – who leads on Faculty education activities.

College staff work with and support all Officers – the MDPP is primarily supported by the staff of the Professional Practice Directorate. With the exception of August, Faculty Officers and senior staff meet together monthly as the executive group for the Faculty.

The MDPP, like all other Officers, is part of a supportive team: there are leads or advisers for many areas of work and many board and committee members to draw on.

Part of the College

The Clinical Radiology Faculty works alongside the College’s sister specialty of clinical oncology where a similar Faculty structure is in place. The College overall is led by the President. Responsibility College-wide for membership and resourcing is led by the Medical Director, Membership and Business.

With the exception of August, the three Officers from each Faculty, the two College Officers and senior staff meet together fortnightly as the executive group (Senior Leadership Team) for the whole College.

Overall, the College is governed by Council which is the trustee board of the College as a charity. The MDPP is a Council member and a trustee of the charity.

What’s the commitment?

This is a three-year role.  To help get into the role, if elected, you will be offered an induction programme to attend various meetings and meet people in the five months before you take up office in September.

  • Annual Conference including the Annual General Meeting

The MDPP may be asked to attend other Faculty meetings, external working parties and groups representing the Faculty or the College and may take on the ceremonial role of Registrar of the College. Occasional attendance at overseas conferences may also arise.

Other activities

  • Dealing with medically related enquiries received from the public or the media
  • Advising on drafting documents and responses to external consultation documents
  • Writing contributions for the College Newsletter
  • Clinical Excellence Award nominations

Most College boards and committees meet on a Thursday or Friday and nearly all are held at the College building at 63 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London WC2. Overall, the time commitment works out at about one and a half days per week at the College. In addition, time will be needed to respond to emails, advise on documents, read and travel to meetings.
