Outline of the ISS

It’s important to note that the scheme is not a means to seek permanent employment in the UK

The scheme makes use of spare training capacity within the NHS and posts offered under this scheme must be approved by the LETB/Deanery. 

The post must be a clinical training post at specialty registrar grade, and encompass a period of higher specialty training as set out in the current RCR specialty training curriculum.  It cannot be core radiology training and we do not offer sponsorship for research posts, LAS posts, specialty doctor posts, or locum consultant posts.

The relevant Head of School/Training Programme Director must confirm that the post is appropriate and contains sufficient education and training to benefit the applicant.  It must also be confirmed that the applicant’s appointment does not adversely affect the training of UK/EEA doctors or existing trainees. 

RCR sponsorship can only be offered to applicants who have already secured a suitable post in the UK with appropriate funding such as an NHS salary, or official funding from the applicant’s home country.  The RCR cannot find a post for an overseas applicant and applicants cannot self-fund.  Links which may be useful when looking for a training post in the UK can be seen on our webpage working in the UK

The UK employer is expected to follow usual employment checks and procedures in recruiting doctors under this scheme. The post should be properly contracted and if for any reason the placement is not progressing well, the UK employer is expected to commence remedial action as expected for any contracted employee. As this will be a specialty training post, it is expected that the employer will have the usual clinical and educational supervision procedures in place for the ISS applicant.   As with any employee new to practice in the NHS, it is also expected that the UK employer will arrange an induction and orientation period. The UK employer will be contacted periodically throughout the placement by the RCR to confirm that all is progressing as expected.

The applicant must comply with the GMC requirements for registration and provide all documents requested by the GMC in respect of their registration application.  The applicant must also provide the evidence requested by the RCR and ensure that they will be able to meet all immigration and visa requirements.
