Dr Ferdia Gallagher - 2005-06 CRUK/RCR Clinical Research Training Fellowship
CRUK Clinician Scientist Fellow / Honorary Consultant Radiologist
CRUK Cambridge Research Institute & Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, UK
My Fellowship funding gave me the opportunity to spend dedicated time in research and to undertake a PhD. Such a step is now essential for a clinical academic and it allowed me to subsequently secure a position as a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Cambridge. Following this, I obtained funding for four years as a CRUK Clinician Scientist Fellow in conjunction with a position as an Honorary Consultant in Addenbrooke’s Hospital. This is a tremendous platform to attain a long-term academic position.
I have had many mentors that have helped to shape my career and have been a source of great advice. Professor Kevin Brindle was my PhD supervisor in the Department of Biochemistry and Professor David Lomas was a co-supervisor in the Department of Radiology at the University of Cambridge. I have also had guidance from Professor Adrian Dixon as the then Head of the Department of Radiology. CRUK have appointed Professor Alan Jackson from the University of Manchester to provide me with support during my Clinician Scientist Fellowship and the Academy of Medical Sciences have recently asked Professor Dame Janet Husband to be my mentor as part of their mentorship scheme.
