Specialist Registration

Published: August 2007

This information does not apply to those training in the UK for a CCT

The application form, guidance and criteria are subject to change in the near future; please refer to the PMETB's website for current information.

It is a legal requirement for doctors to be registered on the General Medical Council’s Specialist Register in order to practise in a substantive, permanent or honorary NHS consultant post. Doctors undergoing specialist training in the UK obtain entry to the Specialist Register through the acquisition of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). Other eligible specialists may apply for entry to the Specialist Register under Article 14 of The General and Specialist Medical Practice (Education, Training and Qualifications) Order 2003 ("The Order"). The Order established the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB). Among other statutory responsibilities, the PMETB is responsible for deciding whether applicants under Article 14 should be given a statement of eligibility for entry to the Specialist Register.

The Royal College of Radiologists evaluates applications for specialist registration under Article 14 on behalf of the PMETB. Your specialist qualifications and/or specialist training, and your subsequent specialist medical experience, may be taken into account by the PMETB for the purposes of evaluating your application.

Please read the relevant documents carefully before deciding whether to submit an application to the PMETB. There is a lot of information available and it is designed to give you the fullest possible picture of the process and requirements.

Please note that applications for specialist registration under Article 14 must be submitted in the first instance to the PMETB, not to the College.  Please refer to the PMETB's website for the latest information in respect of the correct fee for your application.  PMETB's website will also have the most up to date application form and guidance.  The application process and fees are subject to change.
