Specialist Registration

Published: April 2010

This information does not apply to those training in the UK for a CCT

The application form, guidance and criteria are subject to change in the near future; please refer to the General Medical Council's (GMC) website for current information.  (Please note that the PMETB has merged with the GMC and all information is available from the GMC's website www.gmc-uk.org)

It is a legal requirement for doctors to be registered on the General Medical Council’s Specialist Register in order to practise in a substantive, permanent or honorary NHS consultant post. Doctors undergoing specialist training in the UK obtain entry to the Specialist Register through the acquisition of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). Other eligible specialists may apply for a Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR).  Among other statutory responsibilities, the GMC is responsible for deciding whether applicants should be given a statement of eligibility for entry to the Specialist Register.

The Royal College of Radiologists evaluates applications for specialist registration on behalf of the GMC. Your specialist qualifications and/or specialist training, and your subsequent specialist medical experience, may be taken into account by the GMC for the purposes of evaluating your application.

Please read the relevant documents carefully before deciding whether to submit an application to the GMC. There is a lot of information available and it is designed to give you the fullest possible picture of the process and requirements.

Please note that applications for a CESR must be submitted in the first instance to the GMC, not to the College.  Please refer to the GMC's website for the latest information in respect of the correct fee for your application.  The GMC's website will also have the most up to date application form and guidance.  The application process and fees are subject to change.
